Jack rather enjoyed it when people believed he wasn’t the sharpest tack in the box. Truth be known, he didn’t understand half of what Sam or Danielle was talking about most of the time. But he enjoyed making them think he didn’t understand them at all. Mostly, he enjoyed the reaction his ‘stupidity’ earned him from his wife. Danielle rarely found it cute or funny. As far as Jack was concerned, her annoyance or frustration was just as good. He rather enjoyed her monologues about how he should act as smart as he was, at least in that it would help speed up important and timely meetings. Jack would feign ignorance and that would set her off again. He was so proud of himself over that.

There were times, though, when he liked to surprise her. Every year, at Christmas, he took the opportunity and ran with it. He’d surprised her with a skiing trip one year, and a trip to his cabin the next. This year was going to be different. No doubt, she would be wondering where he was going to take her.

This Christmas, he wasn’t taking her anywhere. In fact, he braved the mall in search of the perfect items he would need to stay home. He ran into ‘blue-haired old lady’ roadblocks as they pondered their purchases for what seemed like hours. He was nearly ran over by exuberant and pushy teens. He didn’t even feel guilty when one ‘accidentally’ fell down. He risked life and limb to keep this planet safe. A little respect for his uniform wasn’t too much to ask for. So one kid fell down for his lack of respect. No way did Jack feel guilty.

Fortunately, he only had to shop at two different stores before he found everything he needed. The only thing was that he couldn’t put his plan into action until the night of Christmas Eve. If all went according to plan, his little gift would last well into Christmas morning.

It took every ounce of cunning that he had to hide the treasures from his wife. Somehow, she knew all of his hiding places and rather enjoyed the look of panic on his face when she told him where he’d hid his treasures. After the fourth move, he told her that if she figured it out, it would be all up to her whether or not the gift remained a surprise.

She figured it out all right, but as far as Jack knew, she hadn’t ruined her own surprise. She was one very smart woman, but Jack had her number. The second he quit reacting in fear, she quit teasing him. They knew one another so well. It just wasn’t any fun if the other person didn’t play along.

What Jack was most grateful for was Sam Carter and her ability to talk Danielle into running errands with her on Christmas Eve. It had all been coordinated. The general had called the lt. colonel and highly requested that she do this for him.

When the two women left the house, he moved much more quickly than most even believed he could. He took out his surprises and spread everything out across the bed. There was more than enough here to get the job done.

He scooped up as many of the candles as he could and began placing them all over the room. They’d be lit last so that they didn’t burn down before she returned home. He then took his bags of rose petals and tossed them on the floor and the bed.

Following the advice of the saleslady, he took the silk scarves and placed them over the lampshades. The room dimmed and he gave a low whistle. He had seen it done in countless movies but had never seen the affect in real life. To be honest, he’d never gone all-out like this before. The more romantic interludes had been orchestrated by his wife. Hence, why he believed she’d enjoy this little present.

He gave his attention back to the task at hand. He took the bottle of champagne and left the bedroom to grab the ice bucket, champagne glasses, and corkscrew. Once back in their room, he cleared off his side table, save for the lamp, and put the bucket, champagne and glasses on it.

The second store he’d visited had been a chocolatier’s. Two large boxes of chocolates were leaned against her pillow. Between them, he put the fresh roses that were purchased today while he was on his own errand. Finally, two gift boxes were set underneath the chocolates.

He stood back away from the bed and surveyed his handiwork. It was more than visually pleasing. His goal was to present his wife with a moment in time that let her know, without words, just how very much she meant to him.

He more than loved her. She had saved his life far more than once and not simply in the physical sense either. She deserved to know everything that was in his heart. Maybe he wasn’t the best with words, but this he could do.

His next move was to take a quick shower so that he would be clean-shaven. More than once, she’d teased that the scruffy look was only ‘hot’ when it was on television. So he showered and shaved and dressed in a pair of jeans with a nice sweater. All of this was for her. As he moved about the room, he thought about the gifts he’d purchased for her. In one box, there was an assortment of bubble baths, body lotions and sprays, as well as perfumes. He was really pleased with the contents of that box. Victoria’s Secret has some really damn good smelling stuff.

The other box was what truly made him smile. Because of the work she did, Danielle wore standard Air Force issue BDU’s and combat boots during about 70% of her waking hours. Personally, Jack found it sexy as hell, but his wife didn’t. When they were off duty, she preferred jeans or simple sundresses. Jack had to admit that he found her sexy in those too. Inside the box was the sexiest, flimsiest, laciest piece of lingerie he’d ever seen. She put this on and all the blood in his body was going to rush to one place. Just thinking about her in it was starting the rush.

He lit all the candles and then sat back to survey his work. She was going to be blown away. Then, she was going to blow him away. Not that she didn’t do it on a regular basis. Danielle, on a normal day, gave him many moments to pause. Once she saw this…

He had been a very good boy this year.

He heard the door open, heard her call out his name, but didn’t respond. He wanted her to seek him out. He heard her voice grow a bit frustrated and then had to stifle a laugh as the rapid clicking of her heels on the hardwood floor indicated that she was coming his way.

Moving to stand at the corner of the bed, he smiled widely as she flung open the door. No doubt the words ‘Damn it, Jack’ were on her lips, but they were replaced with complete and utter shock as he watched her eyes roam the room.

Oh yes, Jack O’Neill had been a very good boy this year, and his wife, Danielle Jackson-O’Neill, was going to make sure he didn’t receive a lump of coal.

But what could he say? He loved her. Heart, mind, body, and soul. This was only a small token, but as he watched her face, he knew she understood. She was his universe… his everything.
