A Nice Surprise
by Christina A.

She wasn’t sure when it happened or even why. Rodney McKay could be the most infuriating, arrogant man in the known universe. In certain situations, his fatalism could even be construed as draining. He wore on her nerves like no one else did. He was the last person she would have expected to fall for. Even now, as she sat behind her desk, she couldn’t believe this was happening to her. Instead of going over reports, she was sitting here thinking about him and everything he had come to mean to her.

The question then became: How far to let it go? They had already crossed the line in admitting there was something between them. They spent far more than their fair share of their days… and nights together. She worried about everyone who went through the Gate, but now she worried about him in particular. It was a position, as team leader, that she wasn’t sure she wanted to be in. But how could she fight what her heart wanted?

The answer, she was afraid, was a simple one. She couldn’t fight it. Their relationship wasn’t something they openly flaunted, although everyone knew about it. In the beginning, Rodney had been rather tickled to be the object of ‘water cooler’ conversations. There were times when he was almost smug about it. He was a smart man, though, and quickly learned the boundaries that Elizabeth needed.

It was a compromise that both had easily come to. The bottom line was that they wanted to give it a try, so compromise was a necessity.

She looked up when her door opened and gave the object of her thoughts a smile.

Smiling in return, he said, “I thought the most gorgeous woman in Atlantis would be in here.”

She shook her head. “Shut the door, Rodney.” She knew he enjoyed doing this to her. All she could really do was what was doing now, which was waving him inside the room.

He did as she asked. The smile on his face only widened as he sat down. “Actually, I can’t stay long. We’re leaving in about fifteen minutes.”

She looked down at her watch. “That soon? I’m sorry, Rodney. I was just…”

“Busy?” He chuckled. “Looks like you were daydreaming. Could it have been about me?”

“You and what a real pain in the ass you are. You could say that.” She did her best to look serious, but all he did was continue to smile. It would be infuriating if she didn’t fine him so appealing.

“It’s an art form,” he said, taking the empty seat across from her desk. “It’s taken me years to perfect.”

She knew where he was going with this. The damn man was actually giving her his best pout. She stood and walked around the desk. Placing her hand on his cheek, she said, “All the missions are dangerous, and we only have a few minutes. So this,” she leaned in and kissed him, “will have to hold you through.”

“Ah, a gentle promise and incentive to return home. I like that.” He smiled and stood, giving her hand a squeeze before leaving her office.

She waited a beat before following him out the door. Never, ever would she have imagined feeling like this for him, and it was simply fabulous. Inhaling deeply, she followed him out the door. She worried about all of them, but was personally investing in Rodney now. Prepared for it or not, it was what it was… and it had been one very nice surprise.

The End
