Coffee Junkie
by Christina A.

It was acceptable in the past to wander in late for briefings. Jack never really rushed morning. If Daniel ran five, even ten, minutes late, Jack just shrugged and handed him a cup of coffee as he walked into the conference room. That was then, though. Jack was a little more laid back than most military brass. Then again, Jack was more laid back than just about anyone. However, in comparing him to his military peers, Jack was mellow.

Of course, General Hammond was lackadaisical in comparison to General Landry. Now, if Daniel showed up five or ten minutes late for a briefing, there was no cup of coffee waiting for him. Instead, there was a hard look that said, ‘Don’t do it again.’

Daniel tried to get better at it. He really did, but years of programming couldn’t be shook off in a few short months. He was a man who had needs in the morning. He needed to get up slowly and take long, hot showers. He needed a calm drive into work. Mostly, though, he needed the caffeine. He was the epitome of a coffee junkie and he wasn’t going to deny it.

The dark, hot liquid, loaded with caffeine, was his true best friend in the morning. This morning was no different, except that sleeping at the base and not at his home had broken his routine. He had his percolator set to brew coffee every morning at 5:30. The water would feed into it and make hot, steaming coffee that Daniel could devour at a leisurely pace while he got ready for work.

But not today. Instead, he slept here on base… overslept actually. He was wearing the same BDU’s that he was yesterday, and he didn’t have time to grab his coffee on the way to the briefing. By the look General Landry had given him when he walked in, Daniel didn’t dare to stop by the coffee machine and grab a small, practically worthless, Styrofoam cup and fill it to the brim. He read the general’s face and stifled a yawn as he sat down next to Teal’c.

He knew that, later on, people would say that Daniel won distinction for the best impression of Jack O’Neill ever. He wasn’t sure how it happened or even when it happened. But somewhere between General Landry saying ‘good morning, people’ and General Landry shouting his name loud enough to bring Harriman running to see if anything was wrong, Daniel had fallen asleep.

He was mortified beyond belief, even as Mitchell tried not to laugh at him. He hadn’t had caffeine all morning and keeping his eyes open had been impossible. Instead of explaining that to the general, he lifted a finger, said ‘excuse me’, and went to the coffee machine to fill a Styrofoam cup to the brim with hot, steaming liquid.

He stood there for a moment and inhaled it deeply before taking a slow, tentative slip that was followed by a long gulp, as it wasn’t nearly as hot as he was accustomed to drinking. Before he knew what was happening, one cup was gone and he was filling the cup again before returning back to the table and telling them that they were okay to continue.

He needed coffee to wake up in the morning. It had always been a myth, a joke that Daniel Jackson couldn’t survive mornings without his coffee. Now they had facts to back it up. Daniel was the walking definition of a coffee junkie. There was no other way around it.
