Little Secrets
by Christina A.
Cordelia Chase knew about secrets. She knew that some were shared by a large group of people, while some were held by a select few. Others were kept to herself and not shared with anyone.
For instance, everyone in Sunnydale knew about vampires and demons. Most chose to ignore the obvious, but anyone with even the minimum amount of intelligence knew something supernatural was going on in that town. The mayor turned into a big worm during graduation. How much more proof did someone need?
Still.
That didn’t mean that people in Sunnydale shared that tidbit of information with people in other towns or cities. Oh no! It was a secret. Sunnydale’s secret. Cordelia knew that and shared it with no one outside of the Sunnydale population.
On a smaller scale, there were secrets that were kept amongst a select few people. For example, Buffy’s role as the vampire slayer was only known to her small group of friends. Sure, people knew she was always at the right place at the right time (or wrong place at the wrong time… that happened once or twice) but only a small group of people knew she was the Slayer.
It was still a secret, in a way, and one that Cordelia kept with the core group that worked beside Buffy back in the old days.
But some secrets Cordelia kept all to herself. She didn’t share them with anyone. She kept bad secrets, like the time she broke her mother’s favorite vase. And she kept good secrets too. The good ones were precious. They were jewels… diamonds.
It was one such gem that she was thinking about as she sat in her room at the hotel and stared at her closet. There was a slight smile on her face as well. She didn’t share her secret with anyone… not ever.
So much had changed in her life. She’d had horrifying encounters and grand adventures. She’d faced down evil vampires and disgusting oozing demons. She’d had everything… then nothing. All of that only helped her to learn that wealth didn’t really mean that there was an abundance of money. She’d known that when she was a little girl. As she grew up, she forgot.
She stood, still looking at her closet door. How could she have forgotten? She walked over to her desk and sighed. Sitting in the chair, she gazed out of the window at the lush garden. Eventually, as she sat there lost in her own thoughts, a small smile spread across her face. She had had many different nicknames in her life. She was honestly proud of all of them… from Cordy to Bitch. She’d earned that last one. But her favorite was one she’d kept close to her heart. She’d kept it a secret.
She couldn’t help but remember back to that time when she was three… all the grand adventures she’d had. She remembered her friends and she always kept them a secret. No one, especially her parents, would have understood. No matter what turn her life took, those friends she’d made when she was three would always be her best. Thoughts of them would always bring a smile to her face… they never failed to bring happiness to her heart. No matter what had transpired throughout her life. Whether she was three, thirteen, or seventeen, it hadn’t mattered.
Then her father lost everything and they’d had to leave their home. And for some reason, when they left, she’d forgotten her friends. It wasn’t until recently that she’d started to look for them again… digging into her precious store of memories to drag them out into the forefront of her mind. But years had gone by… and they’d never truly found their way back to her.
So, she sat in the room at the hotel and stared out at the garden. Of course, her friends weren’t going to find her here. Finally she stood and ran her hand through her hair. It was silly of her really. That time in her life was over. It was time to move on. She wasn’t a little girl and needed to let go of her little girl fantasies…
But they’d be such fun memories.
Crossing the room, she made her way toward the door, pausing as she reached for the doorknob. At the sound of another knob turning, she spun quickly, looking back at the noise. Not afraid, merely… hopeful. A look of expectation spread across her face. Could it be? The closet door swung open, but not with great force. Of course, it opened toward her so she couldn’t see who was behind it.
Then she got a glimpse…
Something blue.
Her face lit up and she jumped up and down in excitement, smiling big and clapping her hands. More blue… then a hand. Then a touch of purple. “Kitty!” she cried out and ran across the room as the giant blue and purple-furred monster stepped out of the closet.
“Boo!” he replied, his eyes filled with tears. “I found you!”
She launched herself into his large arms and was immediately engulfed in fur, friendship, and love. “Oh Kitty,” she said, reverting to the youngster she’d been when she called him that. “I knew you’d find me. I just knew it.”
“Oh Boo,” James P. Sullivan said, “I’d always find you.” He set her down but held her small hand in his large one. “Want to come for a visit?” he asked, indicating the open closet.
She nodded vigorously, letting the child in her escape even more. “I missed you,” she said as he led her into the other world. As the door shut, she squealed, “Mike Wazowski!”
